Savannah’s African American Movie Theaters: A Walking Tour of Historic West Broad Street

This tour will meet outside of Origin Coffee Roasters, 356 MLK Jr. Blvd. Space is limited to 20 participants, and pre-registration is required; cost is $30 for HSF members and $40 for non-members.

Explore local African American cinema history through a walking tour of historic West Broad St. (now Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd). For much of the 20th century, West Broad was an important cultural hub and a thriving business district, which included a range of theaters whose screens featured classic films and whose stages hosted some of the all-time greatest blues and jazz performers. This walking tour will not only introduce you to significant theaters, entrepreneurs, and entertainers, but also provide you with a broader perspective about local Black history and the city of Savannah itself.
