The deep-rooted connection between the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy and Savannah's community of artists and artisans is inspired by the original craftsmen and creators who contributed to the establishment of the Davenport House. These pioneers set a precedent of creativity and craftsmanship that not only built the foundations of one of Savannah's most cherished landmarks but also imbued the area with a rich artistic heritage. This legacy continues to inspire our ongoing commitment to supporting local talent, ensuring that the innovative spirit of those early artisans lives on in every exhibit, product, and program we offer today.

History & Architecture

Constructed in 1890, the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy stands as a testament to Savannah's rich architectural and commercial heritage. Originally built as an investment property for Robert Kennedy, the harbor master at the time, this distinctive building has served various roles throughout its history, including periods as a pharmacy, a tax office, and a Chinese laundry around the turn of the 20th century. The upstairs of the building, which now serves as the offices of the Davenport House Museum staff, served as an apartment up until the building’s recent renovation.

The structure itself is a two-story building made of red brick on a low foundation, featuring overhanging eaves and a low hip metal roof. The main entrance, located on East Broughton Street, is adorned with chamfered posts connected by panels with inset diagonally-placed beaded board, carved brackets, and a molded wood cornice. An ornate cast-iron balcony extends across the facade at the second-floor level. The building is further distinguished by tall double-hung windows and long plate glass windows in the north and east storefronts, which are topped by glass transoms and detailed at street level with brass rails set on ornate metal brackets.
