Our volunteers are an exceptionally important part of our museum family. They are the people who present the museum to our guests each and every day.
Our docents work three-hour shifts Monday through Friday and give an average of three half-hour tours each time they work. Docents are asked to volunteer for an average of two shifts per month.
The training process for our docents takes between four and six weeks to complete. There are four two-hour training sessions and then each docent takes three tours with three different veteran docents before giving the volunteer coordinator an evaluation tour. Then that volunteer can sign up for their shifts and begin giving tours to museum guests.
Volunteering at the museum is a fun and rewarding experience that offers docents the chance to meet people from all around the world. Docents also have the opportunity to participate in presenting our yellow fever living history program in October and our holiday interpretation in December. There are even trips to other historical sites twice a year for our docents as well as an annual Christmas party.
